Free your mind to evolve faster: reboot, rewire & rethink | Scott Ely | TEDxNorthwesternU (2015)

  • Are you chained by chaos?

    • All the things in life that are derailing, hold us back, take our time

      • What if your mind was not held back by these chains?

  • Neuroplasticity = the ability to adapt and restructure our brain as needed

    • Gets manipulated all the time

      • Often by you yourself.

  • The path to finding more for your life

    • Trail and error

      • “You don’t get reward out of life without taking the risks”

  • Purge the chaos

    • Internet or social media addiction

      • Avg. American spends 11hrs per day consuming some kind of electronic media

      • When you’re consuming, you’re not thinking

        • If you’re not thinking, then who’s in control?

        • When you’re unthinking, you start to not want to think for yourself.

          • Journal of Science article shows 67% of men and 29% of women chose to administer painful shock to themselves to combat just minutes of boredom

            • We’re addicted to distractions; don’t like to be alone with our thoughts

  • Decision Fatigue

    • a.k.a. Ego destruction

    • Your brain is tired —> you start to not make decisions or make bad decisions

    • You have a finite amount of willpower in your day

      • When parole hearings are in the morning, have 70% chance of getting out, later in the day it’s 10%

        • Judges get decision fatigue, shut down decisions rather than make a bad one

  • Input Purge

    • Remove sources of input from life and then add back in only what’s needed

    • i.e. If you watch too much TV, on e-mail constantly, social media

      • Pick one thing (that won’t effect your career) and remove it for just one week, and document the time you would’ve been doing that thing with what you did instead.

  • Will you look back on your deathbed and be glad you binged watch a series on Netflix all weekend? More than you’d be glad you spent that time planning a trip?
